How We Calculate Item Values (Methodology)

Garden Trade Team·May 9, 2026

Transparency is one of our core values at Sheckle Vault. Every number you see on this site has a documented source and a verifiable methodology behind it. This guide explains exactly how we arrive at our values so you can trust — or question — every number with full information.

Our Data Collection Process

Weekly Trade Monitoring

Every Friday, our two-person team reviews 3-5 active Grow a Garden trading Discord servers. We do not scrape or bot these servers — we manually read through trading channels, document completed trades, and note the prices at which items are being exchanged. We look for trades where both parties explicitly agreed on the value and the trade was completed, not just offers or negotiations that fell through.

Community Value Lists

Several Discord servers maintain pinned value lists created by experienced community traders. We review these lists weekly and cross-reference their numbers against our observed trade data. When multiple independent value lists agree on a number, we have higher confidence in that value. When they disagree, we dig deeper into the actual trades to determine which is more accurate.

In-Game Verification

For crops, sell prices are fixed in-game and we verify these directly. For mutations, we test the multipliers against the live game to confirm they are correct. For pet obtain methods, we cross-reference community reports with the official Grow a Garden wiki. Any value that comes exclusively from in-game data is marked as such in the value source field on each item page.

How We Calculate Averages

When we have multiple observed trades for a single item, we use a trimmed mean calculation. We discard the highest and lowest 20% of observed values to remove outliers (like panic sales or overpayments) and average the remaining middle 60%. This gives us a value that represents what a typical, informed trader would consider fair.

For items with very few observed trades (like Prismatic pets), we note the low sample size and widen the uncertainty range. Our values for ultra-rare items should be treated as estimates based on community consensus rather than precise market prices.

The Value Calculation Formula

Our W/F/L calculator uses a straightforward formula:

Total Value = Base Value × Mutation Multiplier × Weight × Quantity

Each variable is fully transparent:

  • Base Value is shown on every item page
  • Mutation Multiplier is Golden 20x, Rainbow 50x, or Shocked 100x (verified monthly)
  • Weight is shown on every pet page
  • Quantity is the number of identical items entered in the calculator

W/F/L Determination

We define a trade as Fair when the two sides are within 10% of each other in total Sheckle value. If your side is worth more than 10% less than their side, that is a Win (you are getting more than you are giving). If your side is worth more than 10% more than their side, that is a Loss.

The 10% threshold is not arbitrary — it is the standard used by most trading communities because small value differences are normal in negotiated trades. A trade that is 5% in your favor is not really a "win" — it is just a fair trade with a slight edge.

Limitations and Honesty

We do not claim our values are perfectly accurate. The Grow a Garden market is player-driven and constantly shifting. A value that was fair yesterday might be slightly off today. We update weekly, but day-to-day fluctuations happen. If you spot a value that seems wrong, please report it. We review all reports and update our data based on verified corrections.

What We Will Never Do

  • Fake "last updated" timestamps to make data seem fresher
  • Generate values using AI without human verification
  • Accept payment from players to inflate or deflate specific item values
  • Scrape Discord servers with bots
  • Present community estimates as official or guaranteed prices
